What to expect in our round-up? Well, we’ve selected a few fangtasticly fresh options like Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of The Witches, the classics like Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic, and some suggestions that might even spark a smile on your face this spooky season.

The Witches 2020 film poster with Anne Hathaway in the centre

1. The Witches

For Halloween 2020 arrives this unboolievable remake of a story that you possibly read in your younger years: The Witches. The main differences to note? This version features Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and some seriously next-level looks. We’re here for it.

The Invisible Man movie poster

2. The Invisible Man

Okay, if you’re looking for something mildly scary, we suggest you watch this one. Based on the gripping novel by H. G. Wells, it tells the story of Cecilia and her crazed ex-boyfriend, aka “the invisible man”. Pooh-poohed by the police, Cecilia sets out to stop him herself.

Midsommer movie poster

3. Midsommer

At the spookier end of the spectrum, there’s Midsommar. A must-watch for anyone who can handle extremely bizarre scares, this movie follows a couple who find themselves in the middle of a pagan cult. Cue the horror.

Hocus Pocus movie poster

4. Hocus Pocus

Like, the movie that stars our favourite queen of all time (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the cutest talking cat to ever appear on the big screen (Thackery Binx)? Yep. Aside from that, Hocus Pocus serves us quite the storyline: three witches resurrect after 300 years…

Gretel & Hansel movie poster

5. Gretel & Hansel

If you thought you knew Hansel and Gretel, you might want to think again: this 2020 remake just arrived and it’s a whole lot creepier than the original fairy tale. Expect a similar-ish plot but a genuinely freaky witch. Trust.

Practical Magic movie poster

6. Practical Magic

Believe it or not, Halloween can also be the ideal time to snuggle up to a rom-com (with a witchy spin, obviously). Full of heartbreak, true sisterly love and a beautiful Stevie Nicks soundtrack, Practical Magic is the practically perfect option for anyone on 31st October.

Antebellum movie poster featuring Janelle Monae

7. Antebellum

Love Janelle Monáe and Gabourey Sidibe? Right, you definitely need to try Antebellum. But, even if you’re not as into them as we are, you should still watch it, because it will certainly cause chills. Let’s just say, it’s set on a Southern plantation.

Host movie poster

8. Host

In Host, a group of six friends start weekly Zoom calls during the pandemic. Sound relatable so far? Good. Well, things soon take a spooky turn as someone invites a demonic spirit into the convo. Byeeeeeee, *ends call*.

Hubie Halloween movie poster featuring Adam Sandler and Julie Bowen

9. Hubie Halloween

Trust us when say that you won’t need to hide behind a pillow for this one. Starring, and written by, Adam Sandler, this comedy focuses on community volunteer Hubie Dubois and his aim to save Salem. Has a scary movie ever been so lol until now? Nope.

The Village movie poster

10. The Village

Is The Sixth Sense or Signs your kind of horror movie? The Village is another creepy creation by filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, and it tells the tale of a monster that haunts the woods of village in 19th-century Pennsylvania. Does it have the same scare factor? Very much so.

Ghostbusters 1984 movie poster featuring four main characters

11. Ghostbusters

More funny than frightening, this light-hearted 1984 classic revolves around three parapsychology professors who start a own ghost removal service. This is one we’ll be watching wayyyy past Halloween.

The Hunt movie poster featuring Emma Roberts

12. The Hunt

Once upon a time, a group of people wake up to find themselves tied up in a forest. They have no idea how they got there, or what their exact location is, and only seem to know one thing: that they’ve been hunted. Can Crystal save them? We hope…

13. The Lodge

Horror movies will forever love haunted houses, wintery evenings and things that go bump in the night. Luckily, The Lodge features those very elements (and so many more)… Aiden and Mia go for a family vacation to a lodge but things soon get spooky.
