What to Watch on Netflix This January

Let's be honest, in January there is quite literally nothing to do except watch a tonne of TV.

And after a year of Netflix supplying us with non-stop greatness, even in the middle of a pandemic, from The Queen’s Gambit to Ratched, Cheer and Sex Education, it’s safe to say we’ve got high expectations for 2021.

We’ve taken it upon ourselves to do the hard work for you by rounding up the hottest and most anticipated releases coming to Netflix this January 2021.

1. We Can Be Heroes - 1st January

Being the child of a superhero is all fun and games until an alien invasion captures all of Earth’s superheroes. And it’s then the kids’ job to work together to save not only their parents but the planet, too.

From the directors of Spy Kids, We Can Be Heroes releases on the 1st January and is one for the whole family to snuggle up and enjoy on the first day of the new year.

2. Headspace Guide to Meditation - 1st January

If your New Year’s resolution is to meditate more, then you’re in luck as Netflix has wasted no time with the release of Headspace Guide to Meditation on the1st January. Just watching the trailer makes us feel instantly calmer.

3. The History of Swear Words - January 5th

If you’re looking for something to keep you entertained and brighten up a dull January afternoon, then Nicholas Cage’s ‘The History of Swear Words’ is the series for you this January. This funny and engaging educational series about – yep, you guessed it - the history of swear words is sure to keep you entertained.

4. Pieces of a Woman - 7th January

Pieces of a woman is a highly anticipated film coming out on January 7th.

A film that will be a relatable but tough watch for many women as it follows a heart-breaking home birth which ends in unfathomable tragedy and a year-long mourning which fractures relationships with loved ones.

5. Cobra Kai Season 3 - January 8th

Much loved by many, the ‘Karate Kid’ films sequel Cobra Kai sees its anticipated release of season 3 on January 8th.

6. Fate: The Winx Sage - January 22nd

If mystical is your thing then you’re sure to love this new Netflix original series.

Based on a group of fairies who learn to master their magical powers whilst navigating their way around love, rivalries and the monsters that threaten their very existence.

7. Penguin Bloom - January 27th

Penguin Bloom is a heart-breaking true story based on the real-life survival story of Samantha Bloom, an active Australian mother who is paralysed from the chest down on a family holiday. Her struggle to carry on is helped by a wounded baby magpie that her children take in and name Penguin.

8. The Dig - January 29th

Based on the novel of the same name by John Preston, The Dig is a major release for the start of the year.

Starring Lily James, the story follows an excavator and his team who discover a wooden ship from the dark ages whilst digging up a burial ground on a woman’s estate.
