Ways To Wear

What To Wear On Mother's Day

by Alexandra Hughes, Social Media Executive

Whilst we’re sure she would love to have you in matching outfits with your siblings as you did when you were five, Mother’s Day is the one day where we can celebrate all mums and all the things they’ve done for us. You’ve written the card, ordered the big bouquet of flowers, and set aside your mobile to give her plenty of attention before the next dilemma occurs: ‘what do I wear’?

If ever the term ‘Sunday finest’ comes into play most it’s Mother’s Day. Whether it’s a quiet casual day in with the family, or a more formal dinner out, you can bet that your outfit needs to pull out all the stops to impress mum - and the family - next Sunday. You’ve got the agenda, we’ve got the outfits, so here’s what to wear whatever your Mother’s Day plans.

1.What To Wear For Afternoon Tea?

What a way to celebrate mother’s day than surrounded by numerous cakes, sweet treats, sandwiches… and a glass or two of prosecco for good measure. Afternoon tea is the perfect time to dress up a little bit, so why not wear something a little different and try a colourful two-piece on for size.

We’ve taken inspiration from Julianne Moore – this blazer and trouser combination not only makes a big statement, but also looks polished and comfy too. Our blazer in pastel pink has a tie up option so it can nip you in at the waist, plus the slim trousers pull the look together perfectly. Wear with a bodysuit underneath and team with a pair of nude shoes and clutch bag to finish the look off. Pass the scones!

2. What To Wear For Sunday Brunch?

They always say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we love the laid-back styling that brunch plans give us. Although this isn’t a usual lazy late lunch with friends – this mother’s day we’ll be shaking off the usual attire in favour of something a little more refined.

First things first: keep it loose fitting so you can sit down and eat comfortably whilst having a good family catch up (you’ll thank us later when your outfit doesn’t feel as tight, especially if it is a ‘bottomless’ brunch set up). When it comes to footwear, similarly comfort is key – we recommend a pair of wedges or, if you’re a high heel fan, go for something with a blockier heel as you never know where the day will take you. Take inspiration from Pippa Middleton who teams her bright and breezy midi wrap dress with wedges and cross body bag to match. Don’t forget a lightweight jacket in case you get chilly.

3. What To Wear For A Day Of Shopping?

Once you’ve made her breakfast in bed, the next part of the day is leaving the household chores behind to go for a bit of retail therapy. Similarly to the brunch outfit above, being comfy is important. Do you really want to be trying to pull up skinny jeans whilst getting hot and bothered under the glare of warm changing room lights? We didn’t think so. We’re all about easy styles to take on and off as you give one another changing room fashion shows in shop after shop.

Caggie Dunlop has put together the perfect shopping day outfit: a simple white tee with a loose fitting midi means it will be easy to throw on in the changing rooms and the lightweight biker jacket will keep you warm when mooching in between shops. When it comes to footwear, we’ll be sticking to flatter styles like trainers, loafers or your go-to ankle boot, so we can shop until we drop.

4. What To Wear For A Spa Day?

If there’s ever a time to treat the mum in your life to a relaxing spa day, it’s Mother’s Day. No errands, kids or chores await – just a day of treatments and bit of well deserved peace and quiet. Whilst admittedly you’ll be spending the majority of your day in swimwear (we’ve got some great choices available below!), getting to and from the spa in comfy loungewear is the first thing you need to be thinking about. Avoid anything tight-fitting (trying to get in a tight dress after being in a sauna all day… no thank you) in favour of loose styles that will feel like you’re wearing your Pjs.

We love the laid-back simplicity of Vanessa Hudgens’ wide leg trousers and knotted tee. Alternatively, try a matching co-ord set in soft materials so you can enjoy the relaxed and rested feeling that little bit longer on the way home. Remember a big bag to throw all your things in when you’re done and avoid the wet-feet-getting-into-socks headache and team your look with some comfy sliders or sandals to finish.
