Who's Wearing What

15 Reasons Why Princess Diana is Our Ultimate Workwear Style Muse

by Emma Menteath, Editorial Lead

While WFH still seems to be the ‘new normal’ for a lot of us now, we can’t help but feel a shift in WFH attire. Maybe it’s because we’re now finding ourselves in the office once or twice a week or having meetings in our local coffee shops rather than simply spending the day on Zoom calls in bed. Either way, we’ve been feeling the need to update our work wardrobes and who better to inspire us other than Princess Diana, believe it or not, our go-to workwear style muse.

Whether she was dropping the kids off at school or dashing out to a charity event, Princess Diana always managed to deliver maximum style points when stepping out the house (sorry, we mean palace😉). It’s for that very reason that almost 15 years later, we still turn to her for workwear outfit inspiration.

If there’s one thing we’re looking forward to as much as finally seeing our colleagues (face-to-face, that is) and changing up our scenery, it’s spoiling ourselves to a few new workwear items for our big back-to-work debut. We’re talking about pieces you can wear both to work and on the weekends, because we’re all about value and versatility here at New Look.

So, without further ado, keep scrolling for 15 looks to inspire your back-to-work wardrobe courtesy of Princess Diana…

1. A Midi Skirt and a T-Shirt

Princess Diana manages to perfectly balance that smart-casual look by teaming her pleated midi skirt with a simple tucked in white T-shirt. She gets bonus style points for her two-tone heels and her matching thick belt and sunglasses. It’s the ideal trans-seasonal workwear inspo.

2. Match Your Top to Your Bottoms

We understand that the weather is starting to shift and the idea of wearing shorts to the office might not be on the cards, however, why not match your work blazer to a pair of matching trousers for a cold weather take on this Princess Diana workwear outfit? We love the printed blouse as an extra-stylish touch.

3. A Midi Dress and a Blazer

If there ever was a workwear look we could get behind it’s the midi-dress-blazer combo. Ideal for anyone still WFH but still wanting to look (and feel) good for their on-camera calls. We love how Princess Diana has opted for a spotted midi (very on-trend 😉) and complemented it with a simple matching blazer.

4. A Casual Button Up

Is it even a workwear roundup if we didn’t include the classic white button-up shirt? Keep it casual like Princess Diana and style your white button up with a pair of neutral trousers or matching denim and a pair of comfy slip-ons. This look also works perfectly for weekend market strolls and coffee catch-ups.

5. Dress Up Your Button Up

She showed us how to style the button-up shirt casually and now she proves to us how versatile the white button-up shirt is by taking on a more formal approach. Style your shirt with a belted midi skirt and pumps for a workwear outfit that screams ‘I’m-back-in-business!’

6. A Shift Dress

This outfit makes for the perfect desk-to-dinner ensemble. Blazer on for business and blazer off for date night out. The sweetheart neckline adds a cute touch.

7. Layer with a Cardigan

Smarten up (and warm up) with a cute button-up cardigan. We’re loving dogtooth at the moment for an uber 80s feel or take cue from Princess Diana and opt for a neutral cardigan teamed with a cute neck scarf.

8. Pinstripes

Pinstripes are the kind of print that look good on absolutely everyone. Whether you decide to go with a full pinstripe look or just a classic blazer with black jeans or trousers, when you walk into the office, everyone will know you mean business.

9. Comfy Trousers and a Classic Blouse

We love this Princess Diana look. Simple, yet classic, and ever-so comfortable: easy trousers and a long sleeve blouse, ideal for WFH or the office. A cute bag makes all the difference and makes a handy style addition for getting your laptop from A to B.

10. Statement Prints

Looking to make a statement when you finally return to the office? Why not get your hands on one of the seasons must-have prints – dogtooth. If you’re really looking to standout, try a head-to-toe look like our workwear style muse, Princess Diana. Hat optional 😉.

11. All Black

When in doubt we can always turn to the ever-so-trusty all-black workwear outfit. Simple and easy to put together, you don’t need much to make this outfit work. We suggest a well-fitted pair of trousers for the office or denim if you’re still WFH and a classic turtleneck (yes, autumn is on its way). Layer up your look with your favourite winter coat and a few key accessories like thick hoops, a leather-look belt and sunglasses for those splashes of autumn sun.

12. Add a Pop of Colour

Brighten up your everyday all-black workwear outfit with a touch of colour like a fun blazer or colourful shoes. It’s a great way to brighten not only your day, but your colleague’s day too.

13. Embrace the 80s

Embrace the much-loved 80s trend with a classic pencil skirt and an oversized button-up shirt. Top tip – make sure you order your shirt a size or two bigger for the ultimate oversized 80s look and feel. For colder weather, take cue from Princess Diana and style your 80s ensemble with sheer tights.

14. Jeans, Trainers and a Blazer

We love this simple workwear outfit comprising of the holy trio – jeans, trainers and a blazer. Not only is it a foolproof office look, but it’s also the ideal weekend look. Simply swap your button-up shirt for a simple T-shirt and you’re good to go.

15. Go Bold or Go Home

Make an entrance on your first day back at work by opting for a brightly styled workwear outfit. You can either go all out like Princess Diana, or simply embrace colour by adding one key piece.
