18 Looks that Cameron Diaz Made Cool in the 90s

by Adam Fletcher

With the 90s back in fashion RN – and her 48th birthday landing just last week – it had our fashion team reflecting on the things they appreciate about Cameron Diaz from this most-loved decade. Her first on-screen moment in The Mask and her iconic performance in Charlie’s Angels were a few of many things that were mentioned in our virtual meetings. And then there was her wardrobe...

Tbh, in the 90s, she always nailed it. From cute cardigans to satin slip dresses and beaded bags (always beaded bags), the overall opinion was that Cameron Diaz had an unspoken uniform in the 90s – and it still inspires our wardrobes now.

So, without further ado, here are the top 18 trends that Cameron Diaz helped to make cool in 2020…

1. Slip Dresses with Boots

In our eyes, a cute slip dress and boots will forever sound like a brilliant idea. Take your styling cues from Cameron Diaz and opt for a breezy black version and add hiking boots. DW, no mountaineering experience required.

2. Midi Skirt and Nice Knits

Introducing the new knit that all your midi-length skirts have been waiting to meet: the roll neck jumper. Cameron Diaz’s rule of thumb when it comes to the fit? Choose a slightly longer style with a relaxed silhouette.

3. Thigh-Split Dress

For Cameron Diaz, a red carpet look involves a high-neck dress with a thigh-split detail, a beaded bag and minimal accessories. To make it feel and look wayyy more luxe, just add black strappy sandals and wear your hair tied back.

4. Bandeau Tops And Bobs

This entire outfit is SO worthy of a knees-up (lol). What we mean is that this bandeau top, worn with tailored trousers and cute bob hairstyle, has ‘happy hour with the girls’ written all over it. Cameron Diaz it up by adding a diamanté necklace.

5. The Crafty Crochet Dress

Fashion’s feeling crafty – and so is Cameron Diaz. A white crochet dress, worn with strappy sandals and glittery accessories, is a classic Diaz look that we need to copy. Matt Dillon under your arm, optional.

6. Cute-Vest-And-Shorts Combo

Okay, so, we’re not the biggest skateboarding enthusiasts by any means, but we do appreciate Cameron Diaz gliding around in this cute-vest-and-shorts combo. Plus, one of the best things about this look is the bandana to finish.

7. The 90s LBD

Bored of blooms? Tired of tiger print? Channel your inner Cameron Diaz and try a little black dress with a bateau neckline, embellishments and a sleeveless design. Who said that you had to keep your entire look black, though? This cardi (worn as a scarf) does just the trick to break things up.

8. Frills Meet Floaty Fabrics

Sheer ✔ floaty ✔ romantic ✔ frilly ✔ If you’re anything like us, this iconic outfit will be ticking all your style boxes, too. We mean, it doesn’t get more iconic than wearing a co-ordinating, pastel-y look like this to an event.

9. More Than Fashion

1990 called, it wants its lilac eyeshadow back... Cameron Diaz was known for her fashion, but she was also widely recognised for her hair and makeup looks: think powdery eyeshadow shades, pearly lipstick tones and tousled-ish hair. What’s not to love?

10. Shades of Grey

Wide-fit jeans, comfy fabrics, grey colour blocking, this outfit is our answer to: “what do I wear on my next shopping trip?” Yup, although this look seems super-easy to put together, it still hits all the right fashion notes (…just look at those tinted sunglasses & the Perspex bag).

11. The Midi Dress in The Mask

When Cameron Diaz arrived on our screens sporting this red midi dress and black jacket, we instantly knew that she had star potential (and great taste). Playing a jazz singer named Tina Carlyle, it was the role that launched her career.

12. A Cute Cardigan and a Neck Scarf

Cameron Diaz wore a range of original looks to different events – and this alternative red carpet outfit is another example of just that. Here, she’s opted for a retro-style cropped cardi and a neck scarf – it’s a look that shouldn’t work at a high-profile event like this, but it does.

13. Slip into Satin

During the early 90s, Cameron Diaz experimented with her look by wearing floor-length midi dresses (in satin textures, obvs), intentionally messy hair, and layers of beaded necklaces. Courtney Love vibes, incoming…

14. Accessorise All Areas

Cameron Diaz used cute micro bags and beaded necklaces to level up her 90s looks, fact. However, when it came to shoes, we’ve noticed that it’s square-toe heels with interesting textures that took her fancy – and who can blame her?

15. Denim on Denim

Denim delivery. Is it just us, or was Cameron Diaz one of the first celebrities to wear flared jeans and a matching denim bucket hat in the 90s? Here, she’s embraced the denim-on-denim look when visiting a museum. Love.

16. Something About Mini Dresses

Satin mini dresses are one of the simplest pieces to borrow from Cameron Diaz’s wardrobe. In the movie artwork for There’s Something About Mary, she’s wearing her satin mini dress with strappy heels and a no-makeup makeup look.

17. Leather-Look When Off Duty

Whether casually walking down the street or grabbing a coffee with friends, Cameron Diaz always opted for something stylish – like this leather-look-trench-and-trouser combo. We also love how she’s used a ribbed top to break things up and, judging by this picture, the paparazzi are into it too.

18. Back to All Black

It’s true: Cameron Diaz is famous for wearing satin textures, bright pops of colour and fun accessories but, in case you hadn’t noticed, all-back looks also made up a portion of her wardrobe, too. At a party in the 90s, she can be seen in tailored trousers, kitten heels and a classic vest.
