How Celebrities do Tonal Dressing

by Chloe Wilshere, Content Creator

It might sound cliché, but this season the easiest and most sought-after way of wearing and adding colour to your wardrobe is to wear it head-to-toe. And if you’re wondering what exactly this means, it’s as simple as pulling out multiple shades of the same (or similar) colour and wearing them all at once.

Whilst shades of beige and brown are generally a head-to-toe go-to during A/W, there’s several other head-to-toe combos that are also stealing the spotlight this season, from rust to khaki and shades of blue.

Celebrities are also keen advocates of tonal style, so in order to give you some inspiration on how to nail head-to-toe tonal dressing,we’ve rounded up 22 of our favourite tonal celebrity looks.

1. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Heading into the festive season there’s one shade we can’t get enough of: rust. And Rosie Huntington-Whiteley nails rust tonal dressing with this head-to-toe look. Completed with natural makeup, it’s a look we definitely want to copy for the festive months.

2. Hailey Bieber

Hailey Bieber is the queen of head-to-toe tonal dressing, so much so that we struggle to choose just one image of her. But this tonal creamy-pink look is one we had to include!

3. Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham has always reigned supreme at tonal dressing, and we particularly love this khaki look. Khaki is always a good colour choice in A/W and looks great paired with black accessories and biker boots for an added utilitarian feel.

4. Jourdan Dunn

If you love all things pretty and sweet, then you’re about to love Jourdan Dunn’s head-to-toe pastel purple look. Completewith a pastel purple chunky longline knit, purple midi skirt and white accessories, it’s a look we can certainly all get behind and hope to recreate one day.

gigi hadid getting out of a car, wearing mustard trousers with mustard top

5. Gigi Hadid

Although this Gigi Hadid look doesn’t quite span under what ‘tonal dressing’ typically means, it certainly is still an eye-catching tonal look. Gigi has effortlessly nailed wearing complimentary colours and wearing them all together. The red and purple leathers look great against her yellow boilersuit - we only wish we could step out looking this glam.

6. Kendall Jenner

Tonal dressing doesn’t need to be difficult and Kendall Jenner shows us exactly how it’s done. A head-to-toe all-black ensemble is one of the easiest ways to wear a tonal outfit, and it’s one that we all already own. Kendall makes the black tonal outfit chic by mixing leathers and denim and finishes off the look with a pair of black leather boots.

karlie kloss wearing pastel blue outfit

7. Karlie Kloss

Although it may sound scary at first, shades of blue are a super easy way to jump onto the tonal dressing trend and Karlie Kloss shows us exactly how it’s done. A simple pair of blue trousers coupled with a blue blouse and trench coat makes the maximum impact with little effort required. For comfort, we’d swap out the heels for chunky white trainers.

8. Linda Tol

Linda Tol is the queen of street style. So, if she’s approved of this tonal khaki look then it’s certainly one you need to get behind. We adore the khaki leather utility-style trousers paired with a khaki half zip knit jumper. These days we’ve got very few places to throw on a pair of heeled boots, so we’d swap them for a pair of chunky biker boots, making it the perfect outfit for heading out on a walk and battling the elements.

winnie harlow wearing one tone light pink outfit - shirt, trousers and feather high heel sandals

9. Winnie Harlow

Winnie Harlow shows us that tonal dressing can be super fun and playful too. We love her head-to-toe pink look, and those pink fluffy heels are certainly something we need for when life gets back to normal.

If there’s one head-to-toe tonal look that we are either already wearing or looking to purchase imminently, then it’s the camel tracksuit. Madison Beer shows us just how chic a camel tracksuit looks, completed with white trainers and a brown bag. For added warmth in the winter months, we’d finish off the look with a camel puffer jacket.

rihanna wearing monochrome outfit – beige aviator jacket, cream jumper and cream trousers

12. Rihanna

We’re used to seeing Rihanna’s iconic red carpet looks, but her casual attire is something we see less often. However, it’s safe to say her casual style is just as showstopping as her red carpet ballgowns and we can’t get enough of this cosy cream tonal look. As winter approaches, we’ll certainly be pairing our cream knitted loungewear sets with an oversized cream aviator jacket.

olivia palermo wearing khaki shirt and khaki midi skirt

13. Oliver Palermo

Oliver Palermo is good at many things, but her ability to nail chic tonal dressing is second to none. We adore this khaki shirt and midi skirt combination which she pairs with a similarly hued yellow face covering and adds bright pops of colour with a pink belt and blue bucket bag.

kourtney kardashian wearing one tone outfit - grey jumper and grey trousers

14. Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney Kardashian keeps tonal dressing as simple as it can be with a grey-on-grey ensemble. During winter there’s nothing we love more than throwing on something grey, so copy Kourtney’s style by wearing some grey trousers and pairing them with a cropped grey roll-neck jumper.

rosie huntington-whiteley wearing beige coat, white top and beige trousers

15. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Rosie may have provided us with a bold tonal look at the start of this article, but she’s also best known for her subtle head-to-toe tonal looks. We adore this beige tonal look that is so easy to recreate. All you need is a pair of beige wide leg trousers, a white vest, and beige longline coat and complete the look with gold jewellery.

rita ora wearing tonal outfit – beige maxi coat with beige jumpsuit

16. Rita Ora

Whilst Rita Ora has been known for providing us with some pretty wacky looks over the years, she does also put together some super-chic outfits that we’d all certainly wear. One being this beige tone-on-tone look. We love the beige jumpsuit paired with a tan longline coat with a few pops of colours in and finished off with trainers for optimum comfort.

olivia palermo wearing pale blue outfit – high neck jumper and midi skirt

17. Olivia Palermo

We’ve said before and we’ll say it again: Olivia Palermo is the queen of tonal dressing. So much so that we couldn’t write this article including just one of her tonal looks, so here’s another that we love. This blue look is super chic, and so easy to recreate, all you need is a midi skirt and chunky roll-neck jumper. We won’t lie though, the dog is what really makes the outfit stand out here.

18. Elsa Hosk

Elsa Hosk makes any trend cool, and tonal dressing is no exception. Elsa’s neutral-coloured tie-dye jeans are a total standout piece, and she’s nailed the tonal dressing trend by ensuring every other item she wears is a colour that’s shown on the jeans. A look that we could only dream of having plans to wear it to at this moment in time.

iris law wearing mustard snake-print jacket and khaki mini skirt

19. Iris Law

Iris Law is a name you’re sure to be hearing a lot more in the coming years if you haven’t already, the upcoming model has impeccable taste and we, in particular, love this tonal khaki/yellow ensemble. The khaki skirt compliments her yellow snake print jacket perfectly.

If tonal dressing is something you find a little daunting but really want to try, then Rihanna’s head-to-toe black leather look is the perfect place to start. Black is a colour we all feel comfortable in and leather is a go-to choice for A/W, so what better way to start? All you need is a pair of black leather-look leggings, a leather-look shirt and some black biker boots.
