Let’s Talk Rubbish: 4 Easy Ways To Help Reduce Clothing Waste

To mark Zero Waste Week, we’re talking rubbish and filling you in on some of what we’ve been doing to put waste in its place.

From creating new hangers, bags and mailers from our old recycled plastic to working with our four recycling partners to increase the lifespan of our clothes and tech, we’ve been wising up to waste at all levels.

On top of that, we’re proud that 3.9 million products from our spring/summer 2022 collection contain recycled content, which is 74% more than last spring/summer. Last year, we saved 270 tonnes of product from being incinerated or heading to landfill – that’s the same as 500,000 pairs of jeans!

Wondering how you can do your bit? We’ve rounded up four easy ways you can help reduce clothing waste, along with some of our favourite New Look Kind pieces that’re made to be worn on repeat (that’s styles made with more responsible or recycled fabrics compared to previous seasons).

Choose Versatile Pieces

1. Versatility Is Key

When buying new, choose timeless pieces that can be worn week after week, season after season – this will cut down the chance of anything being thrown away and maximise your cost per wear. Examples include a comfy pair of jeans, check blazer that can be dressed up or down or white T-shirt that’s perfect for layering.

Donate Old Clothes

2. Get Donating

Say yes to decluttering your space and no to waste by donating your unwanted clothes for free with our recycling partners, Re-Fashion and Hospice UK. For every bag of wardrobe treasures you donate with Re-Fashion, we’ll plant a tree in our New Look forest with our charity partner, Tree-Nation. So far, we’ve planted over 38k trees!

Make them last longer

3. Be Creative

Don’t be afraid to think outside the box! Fashion hacks like turning a satin scarf into a crop top, a maxi skirt into a dress or old jeans into shorts will guarantee you get the most out of your wardrobe. TikTok and Pinterest are great for this kind of inspo.

Clothes Swaps

4. Clothes Swap

Shake up your usual get-togethers with the girls by organising a clothes swap – trading pre-loved pieces supports circular fashion and let’s you add something “new” to your wardrobe without spending a penny. Win win!
