Our Kind Materials

We know that every piece of clothing we make will have an environmental impact, but as we’re in the business of making clothes, we feel like it’s our place to reduce this impact as much as possible. And sourcing Kind fabrics is how we’re making steps to do that.

Whether it’s a cotton tee or cosy knit, materials make all the difference. And the ones we choose to use are key to reaching our goal of becoming climate positive by 2040.

We’re proud to say that over 60% of our range is already Kind, meaning it’s sourced with lower impact compared to an average alternative (whether that’s by using less water, recycled materials** or by investing in Better Cotton).

But we won’t stop there – every year we’re upping our game and working harder to reduce our impact on the planet more than ever before, by sourcing, testing and innovating new materials.

Organic
COTTON.

Minimum 50% content

Soft and naturally breathable, organic cotton doesn’t use any fertilisers or chemical pesticides and contains no genetically modified organisms (GMOs) which can be harmful to soil, water and human health. It feels seriously good against your skin, so it's often used to make denim, T-shirts and pyjamas.

Better
COTTON.

Minimum 50% content

We’re partnered with Better Cotton with the aim of improving cotton farming globally — Better Cotton is sourced via a system of mass balance and is not physically traceable to end products. By choosing our cotton products, you’re supporting responsible cotton production and helping cotton communities survive and thrive, while protecting and restoring the environment.

We are committed to sourcing 100% lower-impact cotton, whether Better Cotton, recycled cotton, organic cotton, REEL cotton, or other.

RECYCLED polyester.

Minimum 25% content

When you realise just how versatile recycled polyester is, you won’t look at a plastic bottle the same way again. We use it across our collections, from warm filling for our puffer jackets to yarn for a wear-everywhere dress. It’s recycled plastic mainly sourced from drinks bottles that’s cleaned, melted down and turned into a polyester yarn which can then be used in our textiles. By using waste items, we are reducing our impact on the planet by decreasing the amount of virgin plastic we use and preventing waste going to landfill or incineration.

RECYCLED acrylic.

Minimum 25% content

From snuggly winter accessories to the knits you reach for on repeat, we use recycled acrylic in several of our staple knits so they’re super cosy and Kind. At New Look, we prefer to use post-consumer waste (as opposed to pre-consumer waste) which is then reprocessed and turned into a new product. Our goal is to reach a circular system where our recycled products are made from recycled clothing.

RECYCLED plastic and metal.

Minimum 25% content

The recycled plastics used in our sunglasses can be acrylic or polycarbonate. Polycarbonate is just like acrylic, in which plastic is recycled from pre- or post-consumer waste and moulded into sunglasses. We also use recycled zinc, brass, steel within several of our jewellery items.

RECYCLED polyurethane (PU) and polyester.

The uppers of our shoes contain minimum 25% recycled polyester. Recycled polyester is made by melting down old plastic and re-spinning it into a new polyester fibre.

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose.

Minimum 50% content

LENZING™ ECOVERO™ is an eco-responsible viscose fibre and you’ll find it in everything from dresses to knitwear. LENZING™ ECOVERO™ is produced from sustainably sourced wood and pulp and uses up to 50% lower emissions and water impact in the manufacturing process than traditional viscose.

Livaeco by Birla Cellulose™.

Minimum 50% content

Livaeco by Birla Cellulose™ is an eco-enhanced viscose fibre, produced from FSC-certified forests – we choose it as it has lower water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions during the manufacturing process compared to traditional viscose.*

Eco Tang Viscose.

Minimum 50% content

Eco Tang viscose is made using FSC certified wood pulp sourced from sustainably managed forests. This certification of the raw material helps to ensure that sustainably managed forest and plantations will be managed as per the strict principles and criteria of the FSC. You’ll find Eco Tang in various products, from flowy summer dresses to super-soft leggings.

Sometimes, labels really matter. Products with the sustainable forest-based materials label demonstrate that the fabric has been produced from sustainably managed forests. So, that cosy knit you’ve been eyeing up all season just got a whole lot more desirable.

TENCEL™ Lyocell.

Minimum 30% content

TENCEL™ lyocell is a fibre that you’ll find most used in our denim pieces. It’s made from sustainably sourced wood cellulose and is produced using environmentally responsible processes that reuse 99.9% of solvents. The best part is, the fibres are certified as compostable and biodegradable, so they can fully revert back to nature in 6-16 weeks.

TENCEL™ Modal.

Minimum 30% content

When it comes to underwear, the softer the better. Much of our underwear and vests contain TENCEL™ modal which are certified fibres that originate from sustainably sourced wood and cellulose. They’re produced using environmentally responsible processes that reuse water and chemicals and the finished fibres are certified as compostable and biodegradable, so they can fully revert back to nature in 6-16 weeks.

European grown LINEN.

Minimum 50% of total content

European grown linen is produced with rainwater, rather than artificial irrigation and uses less water compared to conventional linen*. Featuring in everything from shirts to shorts, it’s produced using natural farming techniques that help to preserve biodiversity and doesn't use chemical pesticides or fertilizers. It's produced from the zero-waste flax plant and without genetically modified seeds. *Comparing data using Higg MSI - a tool which quantifies the environmental impacts of material production.
